You could say, 2018 is a year that is not encouraging for the smartphone industry. For the first time, seemingly unstoppable growth began to slow down. This started with a bad record in February, when Gartner noted a decline from year to year.
Even the mighty Apple is not immune from trends. Last week, Apple's stock has been corrected because of influential analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who mentioned sales expectations for 2019. Of course this is a job that cannot be taken lightly for Apple to re-exist.
In addition, a number of smartphone manufacturers have also provided a picture for themselves when they have struggled to deliver specifications that are in line with market demand. There are not many strong reasons for them to continue to improve the innovation that is being rolled out.
Therefore, in the next year, it is fitting for a number of smartphone manufacturers to be able to produce many surprises if they do not want the industry to fall deeper. Yes! One of the things that is being talked about is the development of 5G technology . Is that all?
1. 5G technology
Not a few online media and newspapers in the smartphone industry in many countries say that 2019 is "Year 5G" . Yes! It is true that next year we are expected to see the first wave of 5G handsets appear.
OnePlus on the sidelines of Qualcomm in Hawaii has recently demonstrated its commitment to 5G technology. Even OnePlus boasted that they will soon release a 5G smartphone early next year. Likewise with other smartphone manufacturers, such as OPPO , Vivo and Xiaomi .
Even Samsung, which will release the Galaxy S10 Series, is also strongly suspected that one of the models presented will have 5G capability. In line with that, Qualcomm also kept its promise to produce a 5G modem chipset next year, the Snapdragon X50 .
But unlike the Android smartphone manufacturer that has been so "busy" to produce 5G handsets, Apple is expected to release an iPhone with 5G capabilities in 2020. Yes! This is related to Apple's plan which is said to be working on a 5G modem independently.
Not a few are analysts who say that 5G if it arrives later is just a marketing gimmick. However, not a few also say that 5G technology has the potential to become a great technology. Yes! This can be a game changer in the smartphone industry.
2. Folding screen
Another innovation in the smartphone industry that will rise in the next year is the folding screen. In fact we have seen together how Samsung had shown a smartphone prototype with the ability of a folding screen.
Yes! On the sidelines of the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC), the South Korean electronics giant was so proud to show its folding screen smartphone. Mentioned, the smartphone will be present in the next year as the Galaxy F .
Now, after the long-promised technology is ready to be sold to consumers, the next gamble is we will see together how a number of smartphone manufacturers explore the form of the handset offered.
Of course we cannot doubt the capabilities of each of the smartphone manufacturers. As we have seen, they have also competed to exhibit designs or patents on folding smartphones that will be produced next year.
Meanwhile, Google, which focuses on Android development, has also been involved. Coupled as a partner, the technology giant from Mountain View has been invited to make an Android version adapted to the folding smartphone form factor that will be produced.
3. Hollow screen
Despite being criticized by many gadget lovers, not a few smartphone manufacturers are joining in to adopt a bangs screen. We can say, it all started with Apple that produced the iPhone X with a bangs screen in 2017.
Entering 2018, a number of Android smartphone manufacturers follow Apple's lead. Yes! They are very proud to produce handsets with bangs screens. In fact, Google through Pixel 3 did the same thing despite getting derision from loyal users.
Still a matter of bangs on the screen, this year the shape was transformed. Initially the bangs offered were so striking that a number of many gadget lovers didn't like it. Now the shape is smaller by adopting a waterdrop alias.
Again and again, Samsung made a surprise to "invite" a number of Android smartphone manufacturers not to use conventional-shaped bangs. Yes! Samsung introduced the Infinity-O screen design , where this is a small hole as a "home" front camera placed below the screen.
Not just an innovation that is fairly ordinary, the Infinity-O screen design introduced by Samsung and immediately implemented into the Galaxy A8s was immediately adopted by a number of Android smartphone manufacturers from China.
We can see, Huawei is so proud to release the Huawei Nova 4 recently. A small hole placed below the screen will also be used by Honor who will soon be releasing Honor View 20 or V20 . It is estimated that in the next year more similar handsets will be made.
4. Fingerprint UD
In order to produce a front that has a full screen, a number of smartphone manufacturers are willing to shift the placement of the fingerprint scanner sensor to the back of the handset. Yes! That's what is done a lot this year.
The fingerprint scanner innovation keeps moving, a sensor is born that can be placed below the screen. Yes! This innovation was driven by Vivo who was so eager to give birth to a fingerprint scanner below the screen and not a few other Android smartphone manufacturers who adopted the innovation.
So, how about a fingerprint scanner on a smartphone next year? It is estimated, this technology still exists alias will not disappear in the near future. This of course is inseparable from security factors that are not easy to fake. Yes! This is different from a 3D face scanner.
Next year, Samsung with the Galaxy S10 Series is expected to use a fingerprint scanner on the screen. Certainly not so surprising if this biometric security feature will also be used by other smartphone manufacturers into middle class handsets.
5. More and more cameras
How reasonable is the camera on the back of a smartphone? Two? Three or more? Of course we already know together that Samsung recently released the Galaxy A9 (2018) with four cameras on the back.
Yes! We have also heard about the plan of HMD Global which will mix the Nokia 9 smartphone with the support of five cameras. Of course this is what consumers must continue to face when smartphone manufacturers are competing to present a differentiation through imagination.
The development of cameras on smartphones is quite good for now. Not a few smartphone manufacturers that load dual-camera on the back. As for the three rear cameras, Huawei has been driven through the P20 Pro and this year they rolled the Mate 20 Series .
A buzz that is no less interesting is also shown by LG through LG V40 ThinQ . No kidding, LG buried two cameras on the front and three cameras on the back. Three embedded cameras have a standard lens function, super wide angle and 2x optical zoom.
On the other hand, not a few smartphone manufacturers have begun to enrich the camera capabilities that they immerse with AI intelligence technology and also machine learning (ML). No exception, Apple and Google, which also use the technology.
Of course, AI and ML technology can help improve the shooting of handsets made by them. And it is estimated, the camera support in smartphones in the next year will be more interesting, especially if it is linked to the latest features that will be planted into it.
